Art on the Edge: a program of St. Vincent de Paul

Mission statement:

To provide a creative environment for all youth using art as a tool for learning problem solving, goal-setting, community values, and increased self-esteem.

Art on the Edge began in the homeless shelters at St. Vincent de Paul in 1994 offering free art classes to at-risk youth throughout the community, teaching participants problem-solving skills and boosting self esteem through art. The organization opens its doors to all children based on the philosophy that with the many challenges kids face today, all children are at risk.

Art on the Edge has brought valuable life skills to more than 700 children since its humble beginnings in the shelters. Now, on its 10th anniversary, those involved with Art on the Edge continue to be in awe of the power of art to change the lives of children ever so close to the edge.

St. Vincent de Paul Men’s Shelter

Mission statement:

Helping others help themselves.

The Men’s Shelter is the only shelter in Kootenai County which extends its services to single men. Two meals a day are provided along with laundry facilities, and phone access. An on-site shelter manager is available 24-hours a day if needed.

Men have up to seven days to find employment and can stay at the shelter for 30 days. During their stay, the men volunteer their time at the store and do needed chores at the shelter. The shelter’s goal is to re-stabilize these men’s lives, and they are required to save half of their income in order to pay their own rent when they are ready to move out on their own.
Since the shelter opened in November of 1990 we have provided over 52,000 bednights, and average 44 residents a month.
